2018 was an incredible year for the gaming community! From sailing the Seven Seas in Sea of Thieves and exploring ancient Greece in Assassin’s Creed, Odyssey, we countdown the top 10 games of 2018… and see what gamers have been enjoying over the last year.

10. Sea Of Thieves

Pirates have always been a hit in the gaming universe and Sea of Thieves was no different. The game, which was released exclusively on Xbox ONE allowed players to take the role of a pirate sailing the seas of a fantastical world.

The game received mixed reviews from critics, with most commending the reflection of piracy. However, they also stated that the game needed ‘more’ and lacked substance for gamers to really explore.

9. Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4

A gaming top 10 list wouldn’t be a list without a Call of Duty game. Black Ops 4 was the first in the series without a traditional single-player campaign mode.

The game received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the gameplay and multi-player mode. However many were disappointed at the lack of campaign gameplay.

8. Monster Hunter: World

As part of the Monster Hunter series, ‘World’ takes the action to new heights. Taking on the role of a Hunter, the player is tasked with trapping or killing monsters. If successful, the player is rewarded.

The game received universal critical acclaim and was bestowed countless five-star reviews. Achieving the sale of five-million copies world wide in three days, the game was a monumental hit.

7. Red Dead Redemption 2

What has seemed like a forever in the making, Red Dead Redemption 2 was finally released to the gaming world. Breaking numerous records the game had the second-biggest launch in the history of entertainment, selling over two-million copies in two weeks and generating $725 million in sales.

The title could be deemed misleading as Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a sequel but a prequel, being set before the 2010 game.

6. Jurassic World Evolution

Imagine mixing Roller Coaster Tycoon with Jurassic Park and you get the next game on our list, Jurassic World, Evolution.

Tasked with creating and managing your own Dinosaur Theme Park, although the simulation and management gameplay was not well received, the graphic and dinosaur design was praised.

5. Shadow of the Colossus

Another epic open-world game, Shadow of the Colossus was remastered for the PS4 and incredibly, Bluepoint Games managed to enhance the experience of the gaming masterpiece.

Set on a quest to bring a girl back to life, you are charged with destroying 16 gigantic beasts. With improved visuals and enhanced performance, the game has more than earned its place on our top 10 list.

4. God of War

Arguably the darkest game on our list, but also one of the best! God of War followed the story of Kratos as he struggles to raise his son in a world of brutality, monster and supernatural beings.

Although criticised for a lack of plot and solely concentrating of destroying enemies who stand in your characters way, God of War was a massive hit with fans.

3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Following on from the recent reboot, Lara Croft returned with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The game continued the successful franchise, with positive ratings and a new compelling storyline. After accidently setting off a apocalypse, Lara was tasked with trying to find an ancient artefact to stop the impending doom.

What many praised the game for, was the inventive weaponry and fighting styles Lara could adopt throughout the game as well as the explorative world she finds herself in.

2. Marvel's Spider-Man

It had been years since ‘our friendly neighbourhood Spider-man’ had hit the gaming circuit and 2018 saw the web-swinging superhero return to his best with Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4.

The game received universal praise and was hugely popular amongst fans, praising the web-swinging capability of the gameplay its bestselling point.

1. Assassin's Creed Odyssey

After numerous entries into the Assassin’s Creed universe, 2018 saw the latest chapter in the ancestry adventure, Odyssey.

Taking place in Ancient Greece, the game took players on an open-world quest and for the first time they could choose their character’s gender. Playing as either Alexios or Kassandra, gamers fight against the Cult. The game received both critical and fan praise for its graphics and storyline.
