t is arguably one of Hollywood’s most legendary and iconic movies ever made – The Wizard of Oz – and 62 years after the story of Dorothy and her pet dog Toto were swept away from Kansas to the Land of Oz, New Line Cinema have announced they are beginning a new production of the popular movie.
New line – a subsidiary of Warner Bros – have ensured the planned remake will have a “fresh take” on the beloved story, though will keep the classic elements which made the original so beloved. The yellow brick road, the ruby slippers, the Munchkins, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion will return alongside Dorothy and Toto.

It is yet to be seen whether the Wicked Witch will be featured, though it’s hard to see how any movie based around The Wizard of Oz could not.
The movie will be directed by Watchman director Nicole Kassell who said in a released statement: “I am incredibly honored to join Temple Hill and New Line in bringing this beloved classic to the screen.
"While the 1939 musical is part of my DNA, I am exhilarated and humbled by the responsibility of re-imagining such a legendary tale. The opportunity to examine the original themes—the quest for courage, love, wisdom and home— feels more timely and urgent than ever.
“These are profoundly iconic shoes to fill, and I am eager to dance alongside these heroes of my childhood as we pave a newly minted yellow brick road."

The last big-screen adaptation of the children’s books was Walt Disney’s 2013 origin story Oz The Great And Powerful. Whilst creating an acceptable box office response, the same couldn’t be said from critics, who stated that movie failed to capture the magic and timelessness of the original.
No details have yet appeared on any plotline or story arc which will feature in the planned production, though it will be interesting how they tackle the story in modern-day Hollywood.
