isney have released the first look trailer for their upcoming computer-animated movie, Raya and the Last Dragon. Starring Kelly Marie Tran as Raya, the first glimpse into the dazzling Disney animation has excited fans with its more “serious” vibe compared to previous movies.

Raya and the Last Dragon will be Disney’s first movie inspired by Southeast Asia, continuing their theme of inclusion and diversity in highlighting stories from differing cultures. The movie follows warrior Raya as she journeys across the realm of Kumandra. Joined by her animal sidekick Tuk Tuk, she embarks on an adventure in search of the last dragon.

Fighting against her is an evil force named Druun, who is threatening to destroy the entire realm. It leads to Raya on a race against time to track down a dragon to save the home she loves.

Eventually she discovers Sisu (voiced by Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina), a water dragon taking the form of a human. She enlists the help of Raya to get her powers back so she can take her true form of a dragon.

Raya and the Last Dragon is directed by duo Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada. Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim wrote the screenplay in partnership with the directors.

Kelly Marie Tran described Raya as “a badass, gritty warrior” who will actively redefine the classic Disney Princess.

"Raya is totally a warrior," she said. "When she was a kid, she was excited to get her sword. And she grows up to be a really badass, gritty warrior and can really take care of herself."

Raya and the Last Dragon is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 12, 2021 in the US. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
