hat show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey is facing serious backlash after an old interview with the Olsen Twins resurfaced online. Taken from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s 2004 appearance on Winfrey’s iconic daily chat show, the star has been blasted by critics for her questioning over the twin’s weight.

Aged just 17 when the episode was taped, the historic interview has greater significance considering Mary-Kate was secretly struggling with the eating disorder anorexia at the time. The former child star shortly checked into rehab the same year to undergo treatment.

The uncomfortable and deeply questionable interview was rediscovered by fans on TikTok who flooded the social media app with fierce criticism of Winfrey and her handling of the interview, most controversially the twin’s physical appearance.

In one particular difficult moment, Oprah bluntly addresses the twin’s weight, saying: “I know a new rumour that’s recently surfaced has really upset you, right?” The girls sit waiting awkwardly, blatantly uncomfortable with the direction the interview has taken before Oprah continues: “You know, the one about eating?”

With Mary-Kate looking stunned, her sister quickly answers, responding: “Yeah, you know people are going to write what they’re going to write. We try not to read the good or the bad because it just comes with the territory.

“Either you’re too fat, too skinny and people are just gonna write what they…” Yet before Olsen can finish her sentence, Winfrey interjects: “What size are you, by the way?”

As the girls continue to be stunned into silence, with Mary-Kate clearly looking upset, her sister simply replies: “Size?”

The interview continues to become more toxic with the subject homing in on the 17-year-old’s physical appearances with Mary-Kate explaining that the twins had always been “petite”. However, as the Olsen twins try to move onto a different topic, Winfrey refuses and instead sarcastically replies: “Oh that’s so interesting.”

With the audience now laughing and the twins reluctantly smiling along, Winfrey adds: “That is so interesting, I’m obsessed with size and you’re like, ‘I really don’t know!’”

Since the twin’s interview with Oprah resurfaced online, social media users have bombarded the clip with scorn. One user remarked: “I know we’re living in different times, but how did they think that was okay!?! Because they’re young?”

Another commented: “Wow! Was Oprah ever called out for this? Inappropriate much?”

As the footage began to go viral, reactions began to mount up. “I can’t imagine being blindsided on live TV about my body size (as an adult, never mind 17!) when its publicly suspected I have an eating disorder.” tweeted one user. “That was a real s**t thing to do Oprah.”

“WHAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO DO IS DISCUSS HOW PROBLEMATIC #Oprah IS WITHOUT BRINGING UP THIS VIDEO / they were 18 at the time…” tweeted the account ‘Japheth’.

The clip has emerged as Oprah prepares to release her ‘tell-all’ interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, set to air in the US on March 7th on CBS News. The couple are expected to discuss their departure from The Royal Family and how Meghan, in particular, is “handling life under intense public pressure.”
