he first image of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana has been released to mark the start of production on Pablo Larraín’s Spencer. The movie, which will be arrive in cinemas later this year, just before the 25th anniversary of the late Princess’ death in 2022, is set over the course of a single weekend as Diana spends the Christmas holiday with The Royal Family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The movie is said to track the Princess’ emotional journey as she decides the future of her marriage to Prince Charles.

The official synopsis for Spencer was released alongside the image: “December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”

The announcement of the project raised eyebrows, with many fans questioning Stewart's casting as the “People’s Princess”, and the actress herself admitted to being intimidated by the role, specifically Diana’s accent. “The accent is intimidating as hell because people know that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular,” Stewart said. “I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach.”

Larraín told Deadline why Stewart was the perfect casting for the role, saying: ““Kristen is one of the great actors around today.

“To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.”

Spencer is the latest project to feature Diana, Princess of Wales. Last year the highly anticipated fifth season of The Crown arrived onto screens with Emma Corrin winning plaudits for her performance as the late princess. Although, the series did face major backlash for its historic inaccuracies and unfair depiction of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles, with friends of the future king describing the series as “trolling on a Hollywood budget.”

It will be interesting to see whether Spencer also faces a similar backlash for its subject matter.
