28TH JANUARY

We rundown the top 5 news stories of the week!

From Meghan Markle's banana debacle, to the wreckage of Emiliano Sala's Plane being discovered, this was the week that was the 28th January...

5. Her Royal Bananas!

Meghan Markle has found herself facing backlash over a visit to a charity which helps sex workers. The newest Royal decided to write affirmations on the side of bananas which were being sent to women who had turned to prostitution. Many of the women who received the bags of food containing the bananas were less than impressed. One of the workers named Nikki said: “People out here struggle to eat and sleep and she gifts us some words on a piece of fruit. She has the means to help us more than that. It’s offensive, you know.”

And it wasn’t just the sex workers left unimpressed. Piers Morgan slammed Meghan for the ‘self-indulgent’ act. In an article for the Daily Mail, Morgan wrote: “..to sign them [bananas] with the words ‘YOU ARE LOVED’ and present them to women who sell loveless sex to men was guaranteed not to empower them but to subject them to widespread mockery."

4. Super Bore

It is the sporting event of the year in America, and on Sunday the Super Bowl stormed into Atlanta as the New England Patriots defeated the LA Rams. However, the match left many fans underwhelmed, as barely any touchdowns were achieved.

And it wasn’t just the game itself that lacked lustre, the iconic Pepsi© half-time show – this year hosted by Maroon 5 – was widely condemned as ‘boring’ and ‘the worst half-time show in history’. It also left some fans referencing the famous Janet Jackson performance with Justin Timberlake, who accidently revealed her breast. This led to the singer facing huge backlash. Fans questioned why Maroon 5’s lead singer, Adam Levine who performed the set mostly with his shirt off, didn’t face the same amount of angst?

3. Tekashi 6ix9ine Guilty

Controversial wrapper Tekashi 6ix9ine pled guilty to nine counts including racketeering and drug trafficking. The charges could see the wrapper facing a minimum of 47 years in prison.

This also comes on top of the disturbing allegations of child abuse, with Tekashi accused of having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl. The wrapper, real name Daniel Hernandez, had been accused of carrying out armed robberies and organising shootings of rivals as part of the Nine Trey Bloods gang.

Using state-of-the-art sonar technology, boats were able to find the wreck with a decision on whether to raise the plane yet to be decided.

1. Jussie Smollett Attack

Singer and actor Jussie Smollett has spoken out over the horrific attack which left him hospitalised. The actor said: “My body is strong but my soul is stronger. More importantly I want to say thank you. The outpouring of love and support from my village has meant more than I will ever be able to truly put into words.”

Smollett was viciously attacked whilst walking in Chicago. Two unidentified men assaulted the actor pouring an “unknown chemical substance” on him, and wrapped a rope around his neck.
